I really appreciate the time most of you are taking in replying. What a beautiful community! I'm very proud to be a part of it.
On your insights specifically, there are a lot of truth in what you are saying. Your principles make a lot of sense. But I think it's difficult to speak of reaching a goal, as I believe the goal of watch collecting is the journey itself, the constant seeking of the next great thing. I don't believe my collection will ever be finished. Sure, I could consider selling some to finance something new. But yet again, who knows what my kids will enjoy after I die
? If the previous generation had kept the Rolexes, ROs and Nautilus (or Nautilii?) from the 60s and 70s, this generation would be very happy indeed! Right now, my kids are already allocating themselves my watches - the young one falling for the 5270 and the other one really enjoying the RO (if I die suddenly of a strange accident, you know who to point the investigators towards...).
I certainly like a multi-brand approach and selecting what appeals to me most in each brand's catalogue. I do feel that not owning a JLC leaves a bit of a gap in my collection, but I have yet to find something that moved me enough to make the jump. I still have a few pieces in both Lange's and PP's catalogues that I could very well fall for. Same is true for some of the independents. Anyway, time will tell! In any case, I'll make sure to keep you guys posted on the next purchase.
Thanks again, Mr Gatsby! Best.
