I use a windmill-style winder on a lamp timer, so I just adjusted the amount of running time per day until I got where I wanted to be. (The timer doesn't work well with single-direction winding watches. When I want to keep one of those on a timer, which is not that often, I have other timers that will work with single-direction winding watches.)
The watches I keep on the winder tend to be very efficient winders. I think that if I put a "normal" automatic watch on the winder without increasing the winding time I might have a problem.
