I’m with you on going OEM. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of OEM options for the watches I wear. For what it’s worth, the world of NATOs is very much get-what-you-pay-for. You can get a perfectly good $12 nylon one from Crown & Buckle that’s flimsy but looks great and allows you to buy many options, or you can get a $150 one from HODINKEE that’s made of robust distressed leather and really feel substantial. And there’s a lot of in between as well—I really some places’ heavy duty nylon that feels more like seatbelt material.

Regarding fit, you should simply do what you enjoy, but I tuck the tail back through the top two loops:
