Soft iron dials
I definitely agree with your comments about the dial, the soft-iron magnetic-shielding dials which were required for the WWWs and subsequent pilots' watches are beautiful to me even as they wear and lose their original deep blackness; I have always tried to capture some part of this texture in pictures of the dials.
Below are examples of several WWW dials, some more worn, some less, one a NATO replacement, at least one a restoration. Then there are the pilots', including a modern Mark 12 for comparison, and lastly the lovely PolerouterSub:
