Hi Kevin,
Don't think of it in terms of a quartz-like display. The dead seconds (Seconde Morte in this case) has a long and interesting history which we will explore in a future thread (or you can search through past posts). I believe it is really more of a homage to the early pendulum clocks that 'ticked' with a one hertz frequency. And as you will read, these displays held particular interest in the Asian markets in the 19th Century; the ability to 'stop time' was considered very desirable. And Journe has been able to achieve this with an independent seconds as well.
But what gets me most about the Journe Tourbillon is the contrast between the 3Hz tourbillon escapement and the 1Hz seconds hand. Having them side-by-side is magical.
And what I tried to do - but haven't been able to capture yet - is the sound of the 1 second remontoir superimposed on the 3Hz escapement tick-tock. It gives the watch a sort of 'canter' rhythm and it is clearly audible on the wrist or on the bedside table at night. Really very soothing, and I don't need to count sheep any more to fall asleep!
