I personally prefer to see the gear train, for the same reason I am not a fan of the three quarter plates either.
It's a bit too monochromatic for my taste
The one with Geneva stripes is ok, the second example could happily exist under a solid caseback. I agree that much of the visual interest in a movement comes from the bridges and the wheels. Cazalea
