Very interesting post, Nilo.
First of all, congratulations on your 7000th!
Back to your post, each of your subtitles are worth a dedicated post.
I will try to come back to some of them.
- Mechanical watches is a passion: Of course! Nobody here can disagree, or he should wonder why he's spending so much time, here.
- Watch companies don’t listen to their aficionados:
Yes, and no. Yes, as a lot of brands don't care about what we think. No, as some do listen to us.
One example? JLC, with the TT Polaris. We wanted it, JLC did it.
- Watches are industrial products. Yes, for the vast majority of watches. No, for some of them. See, for example, Kari Voutilainen's watches.
- Watch manufacturers, any brand, some day will disappoint you.
Clearly. On several grounds: The quality control, the service, prices, offers, decoration. There is no exception to that. The deeper you are going on that hobby, the more you will be disappointed. That's a natural and unavoidable feeling. But, from time to time, the love affair is back.
- Watch maintenance is, with very rare exceptions, a painful slow business.
Painfully slow, expensive, not always efficient. Brands should really pay more attention to that. This is a crucial point to keep clients and gain others.
Why is it that long? Because brands are more focusing on production than on the service. You gain money when you produce watches, it is less evident when you service them.
6) Vintage watches are fantastic but a very dangerous proposition.
Yes, indeed. Good, excellent warning. Now, if you follow some golden rules, the risk is very acceptable: Patience, homework, a reputable seller.
Dangerous but how rewarding!
About your last point on Watchprosite, what can we say? This is the most educate, polite, friendly and useful place for the watch aficionado or collector.
Best, my friend, and please, keep on the good work coming.
Nicolas
