I guess I should start by stating that, I too, have finite finances which directly affects my watch collecting journey.
When a beater watch (bought to restart a watch collecting journey that got interrupted when I sold my Rolex no-date sub and PAM 359 to fund our wedding), which happens to hold sentimental value because it witnessed the birth of my two boys, ends up appreciating by 103% (according to chrono24), then one naturally starts thinking of what other grail or semi-grail pieces that that beater watch can be traded for. Several of the ADs that I’ve dealt with over the years have agreed to trade it in for one of the following pieces (give or take $1000 on either side of the trade), and some of these pieces are precious metal AND hand-finished to Geneva-Seal standard or higher!!!
The mind does wonder but, for now, the sentimental value (and practicality of a modern sports Rolex) continue to win the debate

Personally… I definitely would not trade markers of happy memories for money.
