I imagine that this post was in response to my announcement that I might request a special detail in the Series 2 that I intend to order. Roger very kindly sent me a selection of faces that he has chosen with a number of details, such as gold channels, ble or gold hands etc.
He is very open to different intepretations of his work, going well beyond this simple dial issue, as long as the watch is very much a 'Roger Smith', I do not think he would mind, so why should we?
You were right to point out that we buy these watches for ourselves, not to impress. To this end a small change in the aesthetic appearance of my watch will be for myself and may not even appear noticeable to an 'expert', for instance some engraving on the plate etc.
As it happens I think that the current design is, at the moment very simple and wonderfully 'english' in its approach to the detail of the movement or in its dial. I have decided to not change anything, but maintain this simple philosophy, but I am opting for the pink gold with the pink gold channel work around the dial. It will look fantastic and more importantly it will make me feel fantastic when I wear it and will not impress anyone of my friends (outside of the horological field that is), but who cares!
I have heard of various special 'requests' for Roger Smiths watches and anyone opting for this course of action should be congratulated on a daring and innovative approach. It is risky messing with a design that has taken Roger many years to perfect and only now is he fully happy with it that he is starting to finish the first batch.
If anyones interested I shall post the artists impression of the chose of dials that Roger sent me and see what you think.
Also, I am very interested to know what past experiences has led you to conclude that it is always best to leave the deisgn of the watch well alone?
