NWD: Berneron Mirage x2

I had a wonderful experience picking up my Berneron Mirage 34 Viridian and Tiger Eye from the workshop today.

The moment I saw the Mirage 34 a few years ago, I was immediately drawn to it. It felt like a breath of fresh air, and as I dove in, I was surprised to learn that the design comes with innovation.

Some ideas; that as far as I can tell are genuinely new “firsts” in watchmaking:
- Shaping the case around the movement to maximize power reserve:area
- Putting the hour hand above the minute hand to reduce thickness (on the 38)
- Hand-carving the small seconds area in stone, to reduce thickness and avoid a harsh break on the dial (on the 34)
- Special gearing on the date window of the Quantieme, so all numbers are equidistant as opposed to later numbers being crammed

Some of these ideas seem so obvious in retrospect, and watchmaking is so old, that it makes you wonder “how has no one thought of this before?” I suppose all the best ideas are like that.

The intersection of (beautiful design, innovative engineering, smart business sense) is a a difficult one to achieve, so kudos to Berneron; I’m excited to see what comes next!
