Independents

A few thoughts....

Hello, Gary,

good post and interesting pictures !

When I saw one of (maybe even the first) the first finished Kari Chronograph,  at least to my eyes
it was more than obvious that it was based on the Valjoux 13'' family chronographs.
Of course I asked Kari, but didn't get more than a "....well I've been inspired by the best old chronograph movements.....".

To say the truth, that's one of the reasons I tend to get a bit cynical at times.

Looking at the design base, i.e. main going train, setting/winding part and chrono train  I believe that:

- the going train is essentially (i.e. wheel/pinion relations by tooth count and pivoting distances) valjoux 13''
- the chrono train (wheel tooth counts and pivoting distances) and pivoting points for levers and column wheel
are Valjoux 13''
- setting/winding part is Valjoux 13''
Just to be precise, I'm speaking of design, not production of the parts.

Now, my personal opinion is, that's the "DNA" of an original movement design -  and there are infinite
ways to design the same functionality in the same space.  That's the reason I absolutely can't understand
those, trying to explain this "similarities" whith the base requirements of space, functions, etc......
To me that' s only one way to avoid too many questions and keeping those "little secrets" under the hood.

To be clear, I absolutely admire Kari's work and personally don't feel  any sort of distraction using the design of an old movement.
I strongly believe that it's a good thing for the trade of watchmakers (industry and independents  if one really can make a difference here nowadays smile
to have a customer base so much interested in miniscule detail  - I also believe it's not wise to start hiding and consciously telling only half of the story behind -
just because this loyal and devoted customer base has accumulated an uncomfortable amount of knowledge.

Best regards
Suitbert
