Thanks and good questions

Great questions, Arthur!  First of all, I recognize that no watch is to everyone's taste, and appreciate your honesty in saying so -- a bit boring if everyone loved everything!

I will follow up with a new post on the origins of the movement -- pretty clearly it is based on the geometry of the Patek movements derived from the Valjoux 23, but Kari tells us that he made all of the parts from scratch.  Our group's resident watch tech expert tells us that he is quite confident that many of the pieces are sufficiently different from the original design that it is quite unlikely that an ebauche was used.  More coming!

Semi-instantaneous means that the chrono minutes hand creeps a bit before moving to the next index on the minute -- in between the continuous chrono minutes of a D-D module and the instantaneous snap of a Datograph or Double Split.  The 1185 is also a semi-instantaneous movement.

Best,
