Jaeger-LeCoultre

Congratulations to you, Nico!

I love this quote from your review: "All in all, I am still in love with this watch, after 10 years of ownership. It is one of the most important piece from my collection which gives me an intense pleasure and price each time I have it on my wrist."

That statement should be the very definition of a watch well-chosen. A JLC minute repeater is high on my list of goal watches, and this review gives me great inspiration to continue pushing, looking, and waiting. If I choose correctly, I can only hope for my choice to bring a small measure of the pleasure that you describe.

Regarding your watch's few drawbacks. I can see factors that mitigate against them.

True, the case and lug profiles of the MMR have aged compared to the current offerings. But that particular case/lug combo was ubiquitous in the JLC catalog from about 2000 to 2010. In different sizes but the same shape, these lugs were offered on everything from the basic Master Control up to the MMR. So, when I see that chunky case, it takes my memory back to an era when JLC was doing incredible things in design and engineering, pushing limits, and beginning to re-emerge as a real player in high horology. Those lugs have become almost nostalgic to me, and I don't mind them in a smaller form (but same profile) on my Grande Memovox. They are like rivets or folds in old bracelet links; clearly dated, but charming.

In terms of production, less might have been preferable, but all versions remain uncommon in practice (or outside of JLC's service department!). A well-known online writer and collector recently told me, "if you want to piss-off a vintage collector, show up at a watch club meet wearing the exact same vintage reference." By that measure, which probably extends somewhat to owners of any fine timepiece more than we care to admit, the MMR wasn't over produced; even with several variants, you're unlikely to encounter another one even among collectors of high-mech pieces. The frustration with the variants is more psychological than practical.

Continue to love yours; I hope you post a follow-up summary come 2027!

Best,
Tim
