I almost spilled my coffee when I saw this image atop the forum. This Odysseus (500 pieces, I believe) mecaquartz in tantalum/18k RG is a minor grail watch of mine. Even google searches struggle to yield more than a thumbnail image if you're lucky. Pricing isn't the problem with this hunt; finding an actual example is impossible!
This watch is a mass of contradictions; quartz movement and mechanical chronograph; tantalum fused with gold; a modern watch with an almost self-consciously vintage style. I believe even the dial is a layered tantalum construction.
Among other watch companies, I believe AP might have been the only been the only other company experimenting with tantalum during the 1980s.
Somewhere in our JLC forum archive, there's an image of an open catalog from the 1980s with a photo of this watch and its original catalog number. Unfortunately, I cannot remember what the actual thread topic was in order to attempt a text search. I'm pretty sure this model was a 1986-1988 catalog item; it's about time JLC offered more models in this metal. Indeed, a Duometre would be dynamite in tantalum.
Best,
Tim
