Me a fan of IWC but do not want you to have any bias what so ever here.
In my opinion,they are what Nicolas point ed out if you are serious about in house or not inhouse stuff here.
but wish to point out here they are two different stuff,hometime vs chronograph.make up your mind on functionality.You want a simpler hometime or much complicated chrono stuff?
many ETAs have been turn/fine tune to be more Mightier movement compare to their orignal ETAs.Please do not discriminate them,for example.valj 7750 have been turned/tranformed by IWC to be a very stable,precise,and tough chrono movement,many-many time better than their original ones after modification.
So,those are just my thoughts.just some input hope it helps.

I know this might be a silly question to post on this page.... I am split between a JLC Hometime and a IWC Portuguese Chronograph. I am very much a novice on watches but am learning to appreciate the brand's history, technology and movement of the watches...

Portuguese Automatic cal. 5000
The IWC 5000 series cal. is indeed a magnificent in-house movement, and the watch dial is buteaful. But it comes with a price - about 80% above the Hometime, and ~60% above the Porto Chrono-Automatic. And I was willing to pay the price, but the thickness....
