For what its worth, I believe what damage that is caused by adjusting in the timeframe that the date disc has begun to change happens over time and its exceedingly unlikely that one mistake will cause acute damage to your watch.
I ruined the date functionality on my first "real" watch, an Omega Speedmaster, but that took 3 years of ruthlessly messing with it and having no cognisance at all about this. A number of parts needed to be replaced in the end.
