Officine Panerai - Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta & Nantucket's Opera House Cup
Panerai Celebrates “10 Years of Passion” for Classic Sailing and 5 Years with the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta in historic Marblehead
Marblehead, MA – August 11, 2014 –This weekend, Italian watchmaker Officine Panerai kicked off the North American Circuit of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge (PCYC) under beautiful blue skies. Nearly 60 sailboats entered the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (CCYR) in picturesque Marblehead, marking the fifth consecutive year that Panerai has hosted the event. The Corinthian CYR entered the PCYC roster of classic yachting regattas in 2010, creating a three-regatta “circuit” with Nantucket’s Opera House Cup and Newport’s Museum of Yachting Classic Regatta. This year, Officine Panerai is also celebrating “10 Years of Passion” with its international classic yachting regatta series, which has helped solidify the high-end watch brand as a widely known and respected name in the classic yachting category worldwide.
New Classifications In the spirit of creating a more fair and balanced competition, Panerai, with the support and input of the independent and PCYC NA Circuit regatta committees, unveiled a new classification ruling this year which reflects the structure employed by Panerai’s Mediterranean regattas. The new rulings place the competing boats in categories based on their physical specifications and, as always, boat class and handicap. The four new classifications for all boats competing in the PCYC North American Circuit are Grand Classics (large vessels), Corinthian Classics (medium vessels), Day Racers (smaller vessels) and Grand Prix (Spirit of Tradition and performance modified classics). The Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta The Corinthian Yacht Club Race Committee served as the organizing authority of the pursuit-style race. While weekend winds were not robust, at about 8 knots they were strong enough for sailors to create some tactical advantage and heated competition. The start of the race was upwind toward Gloucester, which provided a good tactical first leg and made the race course for Saturday well-appreciated by spectators and sailors alike. Sunday’s race course sent the competitors on a reach toward Nahant and back, with the fleet tightly making turns around the markers, highlighting the skippers’ and crews’ prowess as they impressed photographers and spectators with their masterful skill. With Marblehead’s racing tradition dating back to its first regatta in 1845, the spirit of competitive racing is deeply-rooted in Marblehead’s history. The rocky coastline dotted with many small islands, lighthouses and gorgeous homes, along with the graceful “grande dames of the sea,” created a magical spectacle and bella vista for all onlookers and competitors. The added participation of the 110 class was pleasant to see as well, with their spinnakers adding a beautiful splash of color to the overall fleet. The Winners At Sunday evening’s Prize-Giving Ceremony, the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta Organizing Committee presented the Corinthian awards to those competitors who were competing for the CCYR awards. Michele Gallagher, Panerai’s representative at the Prize-Giving, co-presented presented the Panerai Awards with Corinthian Yacht Club Commodore Ken Adam to the following boat owners:Vintage Division 1st Place - Grand Classic Division – SPARTAN – a 72’ NY 50 owned by Victor Paul of Bristol, RI1st Place – Corinthian Classic Division – CARA MIA – a 43.5’ NY 30 owned by Alfred Slanetz of Newport RI1st Place – Day Racers Division – GOOD FOOT – a 24’ International 110 – owned by Ross Weene and Eli Slater of Bristol, RIGrand Prix Division 1st Place – Grand Prix Division – WILD HORSES – a 76’ W-class Spirit of Tradition vessel – owned by Donald Tofias of Newport, RI.Best Overall Winner of the PCYC Corinthian Classic Regatta and Winner of the Panerai Radiomir Black Seal 3 Days Automatic (PAM 388) was an emotional Donald Tofias, owner of WILD HORSES, who took the microphone with tears in his eyes to say, “It took me 10 years to win this.” …Another sincere example of “10 Years of Passion” for classic sailing! The Spirit of Healing Prior to the race boats arriving on Thursday, Panerai, the brand’s sailing charity of record Sailing Heals, nine host captains and many volunteers hosted nearly 35 nursing guests from Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center for a seaside porch lunch and “Caregiver Appreciation” sails and motor-yacht cruises along the coastline. The nurses, after dealing with so many difficult cases within the cancer center, were thrilled by the refreshing experience and showed their appreciation through their smiles and laughter all throughout the day.On to the Next Sailing Port The Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge – North American Circuit continues this upcoming weekend in Nantucket, MA, with the 42nd edition of the Opera House Cup, followed by the Museum of Yachting Classic Regatta, which is held every year in Newport, RI over Labor Day weekend. On Sunday, August 31 in Newport, Panerai North American President Rafael Alvarez will present the Panerai titanium sculpted sail trophy to the “Best Overall” winner of the three-part North American Circuit at the Prize-Giving Ceremony which takes place every year near the Panerai Hospitality Lounge at Fort Adams State Park.----------------------------
Panerai Hosts the 42nd Edition of the Opera House Cup and Celebrates “10 Years of Passion” Worldwide
Nantucket, MA – August 11, 2014 – Many of the world’s most beautiful classic yachts will once again sail into Nantucket, MA for the 42nd edition of the Opera House Cup and 2014 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge – North American Circuit. Italian watchmaker Officine Panerai began their commitment to classic sailing by launching the global Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge in 2005 in Antigua, the Mediterranean and Isle of Wight, Cowes (UK). Over the past ten years, the series has grown to become one of the largest classic sailing events in the world. This achievement is noted throughout the circuit by the addition of a bright white “10 Years of Passion” flag to the well-recognized blue Panerai flags that mark the competing boats and host ports.Nantucket’s Opera House Cup, the most highly-anticipated race of Nantucket Race Week, is the middle race of the three-part North American regatta circuit which starts with the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (August 9 - 10, Marblehead, MA) and finishes with the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta (August 30 – August 31, Newport, RI). This year, the Opera House Cup (OHC) will bring together nearly 50 spectacular classic sailboats for what many consider to be the pinnacle of American classic wooden boat competitions. The legendary Opera House Cup is organized by Nantucket Community Sailing, a non-profit group dedicated to introducing people of all ages to the joys of sailing. The OHC takes its name from the former Opera House restaurant and bar, which was once a group of sailors’ favorite post-sail watering hole in downtown Nantucket. More than 40 years ago, the Opera House’s patrons and owner had the idea to organize a regatta dedicated specifically for wooden sail boats, with the silver bar bucket deemed the coveted trophy. To commemorate “10 Years of Passion” for classic sailing, Officine Panerai is introducing the Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days Automatic Titanio – 47 MM (PAM 571). Created to commemorate Panerai’s “10 Years of Passion” for classic yachting in a special edition of only 50 pieces, the PAM 571 watch features Officine Panerai’s in-house P.9000 movement, with a seconds counter at nine o’clock and the classic date window at 3 o’clock. Its screw-down back and crown guard lever make this timepiece water-resistant to 300 meters, while a unidirectional rotating bezel allows wearers to time their dives. The partly-skeletonized, luminescent hands also guarantee excellent visibility even in very deep water. In addition, the watch features a Panerai rubber strap and trapezoidal brushed titanium buckle.Panerai North American President Rafael Alvarez will award a coveted Panerai timepiece to the overall winner at the OHC Awards Ceremony on Sunday evening, August 17 at Jettie’s Beach. Last year, VALIANT, a 64.25’ Sparkman & Stephen’s 12-metre, took first place honors in the Classics Division and won the overall Opera House Cup and CYC regatta prize. The overall winner, Gary Gregory, Owner of Valiant, won a PAM 000 “Base Logo” Luminor, which every Panerai collector would recognize as “quintessentially Panerai.”
Healing Sails As has become a tradition with each of the Panerai regattas hosted in New England, Panerai will partner with the Massachusetts non-profit sailing organization they founded in 2011, Sailing Heals , to take cancer patients and their caregivers out on the water for a day of healing and respite. This year’s sail will be hosted on Monday, August 18 and will commence with a seaside lunch for Sailing Heals’ and Panerai’s VIP Guests followed by sails on the wellrecognized 12-metre VALIANT, owned by Gary Gregory, and the recent prize winner NY 30 CARA MIA, owned by Alfred Slanetz. To open up the sailing activities to Nantucket residents and guests, Panerai will once again present Cappuccino with the Captains at the Panerai Hospitality Lounge on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. Cappuccino with the Captains offers sailing enthusiasts an opportunity to chat with participating regatta captains and crew and enjoy Panerai’s hospitality before the competitors head out to their vessels for the race.LUMINOR SUBMERSIBLE 1950 3 DAYS AUTOMATIC TITANIO - 47mm PCYC 10 YEARS OF PASSION Unique edition of 50 units
