I have to be honest....
the picture is not a very good one. At first glance, it looks like a fake. The the depth of the engraving is, FOR ME, suspicious. It looks like has been done with a laser and not an engraving machine (which would surely make it a fake) Having said that, the early days numbering was a bit "artistic". The total number: 1500, could have been the TOTAL number of cases belonging to a particular order number and subsequently subdivided in different references (001,002,003,004,009) instead of the SAME reference. I agree that the best "route" to follow, would be to access the archives of OP - Sezione Panerai, where all these topics were investigated in depth and classified. Good luck
