...and was surprised to hear that others may think it's unreliable. My problem with the two non-working setters is that that the date wheel gear  falls out of alignment after a few pushes due to some play. The date gear would rise up after a few (date and calendar gears are stacked). It was missing a dial screw (there are 2) which we thought kept the dial higher on one side and allowing the wheel assembly to have more play (tightening the bezel does not secure the dial on these).

Our solution will be to place a jewel on the top of the calendar wheel between it and the dial. This will keep it from shifting up without causing wear on the wheel from hitting the inside of the dial as well as friction. The calendar hand will cover (and also match the red of) the jewel he is placing there. The best part is that this is a formidable alternative to sourcing a new wheel assembly and will last for years.
