Omega

Manhattan today

2003 Manhattan

This Manhattan was bought last year because it ticked a box placed in my brain by Omega’s then 1998 sports watch brochure I still have.   More rounded and appealing to me than the original 1980’s Manhattan inception; this one also has a blue dial, but sadly with still too much clutter and a white background date.   I prefer leather straps, which are not an option here, but this integral bracelet has an unsurpassed uniqueness and comfort.   In my view this watch is preferable to the latest version Manhattan with exaggerated claws and bracelet links, but I have a narrow wrist.   Of course a co-axle movement would be desirable.

A question for the experts please.   This watch in 2015 was still in its unworn state with its original box, outer cover, certified cards and 2003 instruction booklet from when the first owner bought it at Singapore International shortly before Christmas 2003.   However the 8 digit serial number 80507xxx dates this watch to only approximately 2005 according to my limited research.   Were apparent out-of-sequence numbers used in advance by Omega?   I think it unlikely the Singapore retailer had “backdated” the certificate for its first owner and then found an old, date-matching booklet.

This watch has been keeping perfect time as a chronometer and I have been very reluctant to open the back.

Best
