but bad for the watchmaker. The main problem with radium isn't the radioactivity, Ra is an Alpha emitter, but that it is taken up by the body and incorporated into bones (to cells, it "looks" like Calcium. Any sort of ingestion or inhalation is therefore very dangerous. The watchmaker should take care when opening a case specifically, as the lume has a tendency to flake off into Ra-bearing dust.
Even with that caveat, the amount of Ra in the lume is quite small, so although exposure should be controlled, it isn't likely to be toxic or harmful accidentally. Remember that the 'Radium girls' were licking thair paint-brushes and working a full work week with the stuff...
