Omega

The iconic chronograph, for a new generation.

I finally pulled the trigger (3 months ago), my fifth omega and third speedy. The speedmaster DSOM pitch black. The deal offered by my AD was simply too good to be ignored

For some reasons I'm still trying to grasp, Omega always held a special spot in my heart even when I know almost nothing about watches . Maybe it's the moon watch legend , maybe it's the brand image and versatile design, and above all, the logo. OMEGA, the last character in Greek alphabet, the ultimate, the end, the big 'O'.

Back on the watch, I'm not going to waste the forum's bandwidth with a dozen pictures on the watch we all have seen a million times, but just one :

Of course it's going to be a lume shot ;-p , i work in the aerospace industry so I'm quite familiar with night panel and all the dim green display outlines in a typical cockpit and other instruments . So in my humble opinion it's the most fascinating lume on any mass produced watch to date. And my favorite design aspect of the watch. Yes, it's very similar to the basic DSOM design, but the subtle little changes, the brushed bezel, the Matt dial , high polished black hands and strictly monochrome color scheme , made it looks exactly like an instrument, especially when the lights dim and darkness fell, fitting to the pitch black name.

To be honest ,DSOM caught my attention since its launch a few years back, while I liked the large, high grade in house movement which enabled a very thin display back bezel even on a relatively large watch case, and the black, dashy design, but I wasn't so sure about the ceramic , because I was always the traditional steel or precious metal kind of guy, ceramics, titanium , carbon fiber all sounded like once in a while novelty materials to me. But after wearing it for the past few months, I'm converted, ceramic can be fascinating if done right, I do miss the heft and cold touch of metal, but .... wow, the ceramic is so light, it's so comfortable on the wrist like it's not there.

And finally, about cal. 9300 and the twin sub dial design, I like it very much, the movement is butter smooth, almost too smooth especially when compared to the very stiff crown action on my FP based cal. 3603 de ville chronograph GMT, and the combined minutes-hour sub dial made tracking a second time zone especially convenient. Lastly, the twin sub dial design , yeah... it's a departure from the good old moon watch, and quite a controversial one, but let's make one thing very clear, the new automatic speedy is neither successor, nor competitor to the moon watch. It's NEW, it's not the old trustworthy speedy pro.

It's the iconic chronograph for a new generation.

Thanks for reading smile

Oh and btw, I HATE the folding clasp, I hated it on my de ville, and I hate it even more on the DSOM, it's too wide , too sharp and the fixed claw with double pins, man it's a total pain in the butt to even adjust the strap let alone change it (and the double pins made it impossible to buy straps off the shelf unless you punch the holes yourself) . I simply can not believe omega can stick to the same old clumsy design for the past 10 years, it's going to damage the strap no matter how careful you tried to squeeze into the claws........
