Maybe lot tracking?
When we manufacture products, we have "lot numbers" that we use in our ERP systems for managing inventory. I'd assume it's something like that.

To their credit...
Pretty much anything that isn't a very hyped watch from Rolex, Patek or AP will go for a discount. A small handful of specific models from independents too. Hard to avoid! I have found most ADs will discount the brand FWIW.
