A slight correction if you don't mind

 

the 5170P comes with a blue dial which changes colour depending on the light. It is an amazing watch even with the discreet diamond markers. The fact that it will allow you to be fast tracked to a stainless steel Daytona is an added bonus (you must be from South East Asia!!  smile)  The Datograph has a lovely movement and its finishing is sublime. However, this watch is heavy so for me personally, it is not wearable. Your brother may prefer a watch which he can feel the weight in which case the Datograph would be fine. But my advice would be to try it on for size because it is 2mm larger than the 5170P and quite a bit thicker too.  The 5170P is a lot more wearable in my opinion and it is interesting that this platinum Patek weighs less than a rose gold Datograph.


In terms of resale value, I do not expect the 5170P to be in production for too many years and it is currently excellent value in my opinion compared to the 5170s previously in yellow, rose and white gold. The Patek's RRP is significantly more than the Datograph despite the fact that the Datograph has a power reserve and the iconic large date. The resale value of Pateks in general tend to be better than their Lange equivalents.

I hope if your brother does get this lovely 5170P that you might end up with the steel Daytona!  smile

Need your advise: my brother came across a PP5170P Black dial with the diamond stick markers at his local dealer. He is looking for that one Patek watch in his small collection and he quite likes the design of the watch. Now designs come and go. For downs...

in a high end price league,i doubt he really risking too much though i m not confident it sells quick for msrp in case he wants to flip it later on .btw You lose hefty sum on all ALS so the comparison you ve cited may not the best.

Similar retail prices I think for the 5170P and the Platinum Dato.

Very different watches as Sham has said. In my opinion you get a lot more with the Dato for the same money at retail price. However, to address your question, absolute dollar depreciation when buying at retail would be expected to be far higher for the Da...
