I'm sure you're just having a bad day - as you know Patek has actually avoided the main fad of which they are being accused of in your post - large ostentatious watches. Their specialty is largely precisely what you mention is the ideal - understated elegance; their watches are largely plain and small. In fact, isn't that largely the whole point of their design elements? On the feed the world argument, it's a matter of personal choice - but since you have also spent a small fortune on Patek watches and other brands, isn't it time to lead by example and sell the lot for the purpose of a donation?!
It is certainly the case that parting with a large chunk of cash for a mechanical watch is highly irrational, but this irrationality seems to be well understood by the purchasers - in fact we largely earn our money in order to part with it on the basis of a reputation, a marketing campaign or a personal feeling. We are all creatures of emotion and irrationality so let's embrace it.
I hope you are feeling better, I am!
