If you are a clean freak , best to use cotton , with water on the sponge up in the cotton to wipe the watch.
From sweat and clean the watch to a shine and wipe with a jewelry cloth. Use a dry cotton to dry the watch. Don't have to submerge the watch in water that way.

I use a damp microfiber cloth followed by a dry microfiber cloth.
I only ever wore watches on straps in an office setting so not a ton of sweat to damage the leather. The important thing is to make sure the strap is thoroughly dried after cleaning.
Just use it and have fun!!!!!
Dry cloth not much else needed. And when the straps need changing I order custom hand made ones, and not from the watch brand (as they "rob" you). For my most used watches I have various straps, which I change to give the watch a new look.
