I bought a 5970wg in 2004.. My 2yr old dughter picked it up off the bathroom counter and then dropped it on the marble floor, crystal cracked.. Sent it to Patek and 3 mos later I got it back with new crystal. Tech's notes indicated everything looked ok with movement so they simply replaced crystal and returned. Then 6 mos later I started the chrono and absent-mindedly pressed the Chrono reset button (4 o'clock position) before stopping the chrono again.. All of a sudden everything went wonky.. The minute hand moved like a second hand for a few mm.. the chrono stalled, then reversed then went forward, then stalled.. then the second hand stopped moving entirely despite the watches full wind.
I sent 5970 back to CH and on return, learned that a tiny fragment of crystal had somehow gummed up the mechanism from the first break.. it sat there till I started the chrono and tried to rest without stopping it first.
You could have a foreign item from manufacture in there, it could be something with the movement, either way it's good for a return trip to the factory.. My 5970 has seen more of Switzerland over the past few years than I have.
