Patek Philippe

so different

On paper these seem similar, both being black dial chronograph on white metal and leather strap. But that is where the similarities end for me.

They are both amazing and beautiful. If I was faced with the difficult task of deciding, the most important aspect would be why I am getting it. In what part of my lifestyle would my next piece fit. Where this addition would fall in with what I already have. When would I wear it. How does it fit into my lifestyle.

I have looked at the UpDown in the past and find it gorgeous. Love the dial. Love the movement. Love the colors. Love the pushers. Love platinum. Love the power reserve indicator. Lots to love on this piece. But it is a large watch. A bit in your face large for me and my lifestyle. And aside from the visual aspect of the larger size, the weight of platinum makes this top heavy. So, if I could compromise on the power reserve indicator I would go for the first Datograph. Sportier and somewhat less elegant but far better size. This is to me an extremely versatile piece. Looks far more amazing on the wrist than on the shelf or on a picture.

In terms of the 5170G in black. Simply astounding. Love it. Love the dial. Love the movement. Love the colors. Love the pushers. Love the case. Love the elegance. I have not yet seen it in real life so can no comment on how it looks on the wrist but no doubt sublime. I know we are not to discuss much about value, but there is something to be said. To keep it short, I hope Patek will do what they did with the black dial 5960. Keep production run reasonable and reward loyal fans who place orders with their ADs. The amount of 5170J and 5170G in white available at steep discounts on the secondary market shows production has been way over demand. Every other AD seem to have these on display as well. They are gorgeous nevertheless in both metals I must say.

Now, decision time. For me the UpDown is already out but have place the original Dato on the stand up against the 5170G in black. My questions would be the following:
- how does it fit into my lifestyle?
- what place would it fall in with what I already have?
- for what purpose would I be getting it?

To be honest I want both the original Dato and the 5170G. Both amazing. The Dato would work better in terms of lifestyle. It could easily become my first or second choice for daily wearer due it being so versatile. Possibly it would collide with my regular favorite the 5960P, but the identity of the dial is so different that there could be room for it. Hmmm... The 5170G is so elegant and so special. But for me it would be a watch worn occasionally and spend far more time in the safe than on the wrist. But it would be very special when taken out so would definitely put its mark there. Given the choice right now, especially given I am happy with my regular wearers, for me the choice would be 5170G black. But this is mostly because I am happy with my regular pieces and do not have anything like the 5170G.

Enjoy your decision making and do let us know what you end up with! Perhaps it will be something altogether different.
