Yes there was a gap.
I'm sure there are a number of reasons but at the time of the 3700, it was large with no seconds hand and from a maker known for gold dress watches, not steel sport watches who also did not have the market awareness it does now.
The 3800 met with greater success, at least for me, than the 3700. It was more in line with the dress watch line with respect to size which, at the time, was more popular.
I believe the 5800 met with a short run due to its size competing with the 3710 and 3712.
