I love this idea...
Since you're asking for opinions...I would personally go for a an Explorer II or a Sea Dweller (not sure why but I always prefer the look of the SD to the Sub) those seem more dual purpose (as is the Sub of course) - for both daily wear but also can be worn doing just about anything and the more worn the better it looks.
As for giving it to him, I don't personally think a kid of 16 or even 18 needs a watch of that level. Of course that's my personal opinion...but if it was me, I'd teach him all about watches as he grew up, and present this to him as he steps out into the adult world from college. For some reason that seems to me a great time to give a young adult a watch he will wear for the rest of his life, through all the jobs, personal adventures, etc that he embarks on when he "leaves the nest" so to speak.
I would contact Rolex and ask them whether it's best to just let the watch sit and get it re-serviced before presenting it, or to keep it on a winder in your safe...I would be interested in knowing what they say as it can't be the first time someone's asked that question but I've never heard the answer before.
Congratulations! And I hope your son realizes one day what a cool Dad he has! I wish my father had done something like that for me and I'm not even a boy...
Excellent idea!

Sub, GMT or Dayto, it doesn't matter. What does really matter is that YOU, his father, thought about buying him a Rollex from his year of birth, that you will keep secret in a safe till his 16th or 18th B.day. Any of these 3 models is iconic, so you can't...
Excellent idea indeed,

I would do the same but I have three girls. However, because they are all divers, I have decided to buy them all a medium sized Yacht Masters. I think that Yacht Master would make an outstanding present. Taking into account the platin dial and bezel, this...
Fantastic idea

Nicolas is correct it is the thought more than the gift that really does count. Go with your instinct. But it's great to see that you are doing something like this - and it has certainly inspired me!

I would want to introduce a spirit of adventure...i'd go for a brand new Explorer and keep it absolutely intact....or even better perhaps go for the watch that will likely become iconic...the green Milgauss and keep it perfect...the Reggae Rolex.
