Excellent idea indeed,
I would do the same but I have three girls. However, because they are all divers, I have decided to buy them all a medium sized Yacht Masters.
I think that Yacht Master would make an outstanding present. Taking into account the platin dial and bezel, this watch is surprisingly "cheap". Furthermore, Yacht Master is fine dress watch, sporting watch as well as a very nice diving watch. Compared with other Rolex models, Yach Master is not very common and in case Rolex will stop producing this model during the coming years or change it radically, a brand new Yacht Master would make a fantastic present in 18 years.
Your idea is so great that I will start working a boy producing project tonight. I would love to buy such a watch for the future.
Best regards, Kari
Excellent idea!

Sub, GMT or Dayto, it doesn't matter. What does really matter is that YOU, his father, thought about buying him a Rollex from his year of birth, that you will keep secret in a safe till his 16th or 18th B.day. Any of these 3 models is iconic, so you can't...

Nicolas is correct it is the thought more than the gift that really does count. Go with your instinct. But it's great to see that you are doing something like this - and it has certainly inspired me!
I love this idea...

Since you're asking for opinions...I would personally go for a an Explorer II or a Sea Dweller (not sure why but I always prefer the look of the SD to the Sub) those seem more dual purpose (as is the Sub of course) - for both daily wear but also can be wo...

I would want to introduce a spirit of adventure...i'd go for a brand new Explorer and keep it absolutely intact....or even better perhaps go for the watch that will likely become iconic...the green Milgauss and keep it perfect...the Reggae Rolex.
