For me it was a matter of not being proportional.
I think whenever Rolex goes beyond 40mm, it gets real tricky and hard to get it right. Sometimes I get the feeling that I'm looking at 2 dials, one superimposed on top of the other (Rolex tried to fix this problem with the newer dial). I briefly thought about it before going with the Aquanaut Travel Time (at the time about the same price). And therein lies the problem: many people "think" about it, but few will actually go for it at that price point.

The steel version, black or blue dial, is relatively popular, here...

Several of us own it. Now, it is a big watch, quite high in price, even if it is justified by its complication(s), and the fluted bezel may not be everybody's taste. But it is a very good watch! And such an UnRolex Rolex, too! Best, Nicolas ...

But I don’t see a point waiting for it or paying double MSRP for the SS models. I think the datejust II has the same look minus the complex annual cal. The gold one... forget it I think there are much cooler watches out there for that price.
