My philosophy in acquiring watches has been to go to the strength of a manufacturer and the watch you have here certainly fits that bill. It is a design which has been around for some time as well as the Sub, GMT, Explorer, etc. I would suspect your friends' comments were directed to the two-tone feature only and reflect what is currently more popular but I can assure you that these preferences seem to be cyclical and you may see a change sooner than you think.
Change it up, put a killer strap on it. I'd keep it.

I think this model is the one that carries the most the rolex DNA...
... its a personal opinion of course. But for me, this models screams Rolex. The 2 tones, the dented bezel, the green roman numbers, etc... But if propaganda of your friends is hitting you too hard, jst change friends

and add another at some point to contrast it. You will take a hit to sell it. FWIW, Rolex started the two tone look and all the others followed, they no longer make them but Rolex still does. Its a fine tradition and will last longer than us, I think.
