As we know there is always a lot of speculation around the exclamation point. My experience is based on observation. No no I have not solved the issue but at least I have two examples below with similar dials and close serial numbers. Below you have the t...  

both cases have been produced for sure in 1961 as 1962 production begins above 750.000. so both dials with underline look a little bit early . usually in this case range you see " tulip " crown dials or last with depth in silver. also case backs punched "... 

Going from memory. I will recon firm today. But the sale date of the later one is 1963. Best Bill

Later serial with an 86x,xxx and the corresponding 62 case back. But it is a 4 line 2 gold and 2 silver. Best Bill

Bill thank you for the post. I read it with great interest as I also have a 5512 with exclamation point dial. However my case back is from I 1962 (first period). The serial Nr is 870 xxx. I love your version with the copper like gilt printing of Rolex and... 

Later serial with a later date case back. AS Marcello noted 1962 started around serial 750,xxx. The interesting part is to see up to what serial do we find the exclamation. Your example sets it to atleast 870,xxx. Thnaks Bill

this is one the typical " overlap " periods ... I have even seen a couple of 5512 with excl. point and minutes ring but case in the 990.000 range ( so latest watches produced in 1963 ) : both watches looked untouched with hands 100 % consistent to indexes... 

I seem the order is exclamation followed by underline with the overlap in the middle. so we could say the most logical time line is: Exclamation 1961-1963 with a serial range 600,xxx - 990,xxx Underline 1962-1963 +/- 800,xxx and upto the end of the pointe...
