I have to say that I have wanted one of these for a very long time, but after never finding a single one I decided to seek the help of a professional! I have a friend who is one of the better Rolex dealers in London. I asked him a few weeks ago if he could find me a "red depth" 6610. He has been dealing in vintage Rolex for many years, and he told me not to hold my breath as he had not come across one for a long time.
Two weeks after I mentioned to him that I really wanted one, a very strange thing happened. A man walked into a London jewellers and asked if they would buy his watch. He was the first owner of this watch. He had ALL the original papers and everything that came with this watch when it was new. The jewellers did not know what the watch was, but they knew of my friend as he advertises his interest in vintage Rolex. They had such an advert and gave him a call. Then they sent him a rough scan of the watch below.
"Red Depth" 6610!!! My friend cold hardly believe it. And now it sits in my collection. It needed a little love and care but i decided against polishing the case as its condition is superb. The patina has that warmth to it that watches of this vintage acquire. And it has that "Red Depth" underneath the Explorer. Rolex produced two versions of this Red writing. This is the second version, dating 26 January 1956! This now completes my search for this specific watch, and also completes my set of vintage Explorers.
I would love to see any other "Red Depths" that are out there and what people think of them. I am not sure what it is that draws me so much to this watch. Obviously i love that sexy red writing!! But also, as a part of a broader collection it is really nice to have watches of very different style. The size of the Explorer is very different to the Subs and Seadwellers, and that difference adds a variety that i really like in collecting. Sorry the scan has the camera reflection in it. Jocke, if you can give me some pointers on how to avoid this...it was taken in a white tent!! But that damn reflection in every shot!
And of course, this watch has a brother.
