Rolex

Nice post....

....as ever, I would guess the world of Rolex buyers is stratified into a large number of "types". You clearly identify some of those types in the article. I meet plenty of people who like watches but wouldn't have a clue about the vintage Rolex on my wrist. One of the real beauties about vintage Rolex is that because so many of the Subs "look the same", most people assume they are the same. Yet, for the collector, knowing he has something special on his wrist that nobody would notice is a nice feeling. Knowing that a watch has a detailed history and that it played a part in the making of the Rolex brand....yes, Rolex is replete with history and that is something which, perhaps, those that judge the brand often fail to factor into the process. Nicoias mentioned that solid clunking feel of quality when you put on a modern Rolex. I agree with him fully, yet, that feel comes from almost a century of innovation and focus.

I can't judge for others, but it seems that most people buy a watch for one of a number of key reasons. Status may well be high on the list for many, but i would argue that such a motive doesn't often lie behind the purchase from the type of collector who is on PuristS. I think an altogether different typo of collector gathers here. I would guess 70% of all posts relate to vintage watches....I dont think status is a factor for many of these collectors.

I am certainly one who buys a Rolex! I considered adding the new Sea-Dweller to my collection. In the end I decided against. Here is my rationale. I have collected vintage Sea-Dwellers and now have 7. It seemed a logical step to continue the process of collection by adding a modern variant. In the end, I decided against it as I want to slim-down my Sea-Dweller collection and I also preferred the modern Omega SM300. For me, it was about continuation of a collecting theme rather than how "good" the watch is. Take my 6200 Submariner.....it has the movement of an old clock inside it....its movement is a shocker. Yet, its pivotal in my collection as it represents the very first big crown produced by Rolex and quite likely he very first Submariner designed by Rolex. Its about the history.
