a birth year watch is a specific piece that was produced on one’s birth year (as opposed to the original release date of the model, which can be years before). But how do you check for that production date at the AD? Does the AD go through all the papers ... 

For older pieces, there are many references online, especially for Rolex and Tudor that will date the year of manufacturing (approx. but overall fairly accurately) based on the serial number. Since 2002 Rolex and Tudor have gone with random serial numbers...

Sales reps have heard it all given the watch shortage (which may turn to a surplus given interest rates..). I think seeing my family may have tipped the scales of fortune in my favor!
