To add, here is the display from Basel World in 2017 showing the original 62MAS (with a description of its history that echos Bill’s), followed by the re-issue unveiled at Basel World- the SLA017. I went crazy for this watch when I saw it and called my local Grand Seiko dealer and was placed at the top of the list. It arrived a few months ago later. They even discounted it. 😊
A number of things are really appealing about this reference. First, the dial is sublime with its greyish/greenish hue. I can’t think of another like it. (Maybe the Blancpain Bathyscaphe, but not quite). The case shape is not something you see often but it has a very cool 60s aesthetic. I love it because it’s unique relative to any other dive watch I have. The domed sapphire crystal creates really interesting distortions when looking at the dial from an angle. And the polished indices reflect light in a very dramatic and unusual way. Really a special piece, and on a period tropic strap it just takes you right back to that era.
