Seiko

One of my watches I have not yet written about here - a humble Seiko 5 I got as a present from a trip to Japan my parents did many, many years ago. At the time it was my first automatic and it appeared to me to be the epitome of an engineer's watch - the ...  

But, interestingly, most models are available ONLY outside Japan!!! :-( Great watch, indeed. Ken

And actually made in Japan, too, which I believe not all 5s are.

Only domestically produced watches there? That I did not know.

...and 'K' for those made in Singapore and Malaysia.

The day disc is in English and Arabic, even though the watch was bought in Japan - weird, right?

... It is weird. Arabic is usually used for Chinese market. Perhaps it is, again, ex-Japan market only! Damn! Ken

If only for outside Japan? Curious about Arabic days for Chinese market - how come?

They are probably rarer than Seiko 5s The 5 is a watch all enthusiasts should be grateful for - it probably gets more people into mechanical watches than any other piece. And unless you truly abuse it, it\'s also fairly durable. The Toyota Corolla of the ... 

Seiko 5 is an important part of the watch world, as it allows many people to enjoy or experience mechanical watches.

And in spite of not having a System 51 type manufacturing process and being of metal, rather than plastic construction, it costs the same or less than the System 51, too. Not a watch many lust after but an important one, nevertheless

Cool 5 you have there

This was my "gateway drug" into the world of horology, and I still wear mine now and then due to its sheer robustness and practicality! A great watch to tinker with too.. Regards, skyeriding

The one downside of the 5 is that Seiko randomly decides (or so it at least appears), which market gets what. And it feels that all the cool pieces are always on offer only somewhere else

While on pictures some pieces appear pretty cool, have never seen one live. But then they are owned by Seiko, so no wonder on the policy
