I could not agree more with you about the impact of a strap on how a watch sits on the wrist and also how it looks in terms of lug to lug.
I tried the 42mm Fifty Fathoms on the rubber strap and it was significantly smaller than my 40mm Sea Dweller, to the point that the Blancpain salesperson and myself had to triple check the tag of the watch to be sure it is not the 38mm version. It was insane. The 42mm FF was clearly more compact than the 40mm SD because of the short lugs but also with the rubber strap that does not extrude at all (the opposite) the watch was like a 39mm watch. Brilliant
New shoes, and boy does it make a difference. Now it is simply perfect in terms of aesthetics and size.

more refined shape and being very soft, it now sits naturally and perfectly on my wrist. The case is very flat and it is only the crystal that gives the nominal height. The watch is sitting very nicely on my 16cm wrist. Thanks again for looking

On the lugs front, and as the back is almost 100% flat, they are a direct extension of the lower side. On the strap front, I had it custom made and it fits the dial’s nature perfectly. Oh well, tastes are personal as they say 😊
