I'm crazy, I actually counted the number of teeth on the gear to try and figure this out! Hmmmm...35 tooth gear..... I also see some blueprint spec sheet in the background, is it related? -MW

maybe to interface with a timing belt? It doesn't seem to have a spline so maybe a tensioner or idler or something... a
