TimeOut

Thomas..

Thanks hugely for posting the video, that was thrilling to watch. Also, I can't believe how glossy the paintwork is on that Ferrari.

I'm not into lecturing, but I'll share with you how I drive based on knowledge gained from various advanced driving courses. On roads like these, basically my technique is to use the brakes to slow the car to the right speed for the corner well in advance of reaching it, then to downshift to the gear I'm going to need beyond the corner, and then I guide the car around the corner using just a tiny bit of throttle - not enough to make it accelerate or to risk a spin, but just enough to make the car more balanced and stable. After the apex is passed, I feed in the power very gently and progressively to accelerate away.

The OP is also right about the steering, it's very hard to correct your line accurately mid-corner (if your car loses traction or if an animal or pedestrian wanders into the road for example, or if you come across some rocks in the road) if you're holding the steering wheel on the inside. I tend to hold it at the 10 and 2 position (or 9 and 3 for fast roads with shallow corners) and feed it through my hands for tight corners.

Take heart, the way I see it, you're doing a lot right already - spotting and reacting to hazards such as the horse and cart in good time, straightening out the twists when it's safe to do so, using engine braking to stop the car running away, etc. I'm sure you'd be very smooth and fluent indeed after an advanced driving course.

Hope I get to drive a 599GTB one day!

Best,

J.
