The Production Figures
As far as I know there was little published yet about production figures and as you may remember from the V&C Chronographs from that period, there were many variants and each variant with different numbers.
Variants of cases, of lugs, of dials, of movements, of material or material combinations etc..
For a specific model of the 4240 it is said, it was manufactured in less than 50 pieces in steel.
What indicates your estimation figures per year are by far to high. Those refs are pretty rare. Each watch of those refs you can find to day is a limited edition by today's Haute Horologie standards (not the standards of Rolex, Omega, IWC or JLC of course).

I would have guessed it's Pala - Indian. But yours is Chinese and lime stone, they are phantastic art. According to the posture of hands (indian mudra) they have had a certain meaning mostly corresponding to Buddhas life (or former life) story.
