Setting the Equation

requires at least 1 reference point.
If you look closely at the cam you will see there are 8 points marked.

There are 4 days of the year when the days are equal and there are 4, plus or minus extremes.
A way to set it up is to set the cam to one of the 4 equal days then fit the hands. Or do as I do, during making I
fit a pin to the equation hand pipe so the hand can only be placed in one position which is an equal day, I pick September the 1st as that is my birthday, then set the cam to Sept. 1st and it is done.
A little forthought can save a lot of frustration.

Pehaps surprisingly there are considerably more complicated and less efficient equation mechanisms in which the equation hand follows or leads the minute hand on its journey around the dial.
Most equation indicators have a hand and scale elsewhere on the dial.
