Bob trimmed a purpleheart shaft down to 11 mm at the tip . . .

. . . and will aim for the same diameter in maple.  Pool cue shafts are typically 12.75 mm +/- .25 mm, snooker cues are between 9 and 10.5 mm.  The reason he can't go any narrower than 11 mm is the ferrule materials he has on hand to work with aren't up to the job.  Snooker cues have metal, typically brass, ferrules which are thin enough to provide the strength necessary to protect the tip end of a shaft.  Bob has only synthetics and natural materials like buffalo horn which aren't nearly as strong as brass or titanium, and consequently have to be thicker to perform functionally.
