The new Lange 1 moonphase is a very clever solution to combine a day nite indicator with a moonphase.. Such a design will be very useful for perpetual calendars..

They don't show a full moon in the videos, but wouldn't the seconds hand be sitting above this anyway? 

But I found one pic which illustrates what I mean (look at the bottom of the moon).. the moon is attached to the pivot via a ledge.. At full moon, it may be more obvious.. In any case it's a clever and elegant solution..

It could also be showing just because it is macro at an angle that we might never see without a loupe.... lets await a full moon to see!!

It's a clever and novel moonphase.. Hope to see it implemented in a perpetual cal too

A Zenith reference book says Zenith first used a multi-disc day/night moonphase indicator in February 2008, with the launch of the El Primero 4034 reference. Lange's implementation of this concept may be a bit nicer. Zenith actually did use a sapphire disc -- see this video (specifically go to 3 minutes 24 seconds into the video to hear a description of the sapphire disc). I'm not sure if other brands did this as well.

They are ages ahead of others. Wonder if their innovations are patented?

mounting the moon on a sapphire disc will certainly increase the thickness of the movement so Langes approach definitely helped in keeping the case thickness to 10mms..
More brands should do this..

I don't find this day-night plus moon phase particularly clever or elegant. For one thing, it gives 12 hour "days" which is almost always wrong. And I think that most future owners of this watch will miss seeing the starry sky disk on their wrists. Near new moons you will see a big blue blank disk most of the time that you look at your watch. Sad. -pay

I'm interested to see this in person because I wonder if I'd miss seeing the stars in the background all the time. I suspect I might. For me, those background stars are the main aesthetic appeal of the Lange 1 moonphase complication. I think I'd prefer to see those stars all the time rather than have the additional day/night complication. But as with all Lange releases, I'll need to see it in the flesh before I can say for sure. I've been wrong too many times before when trying to translate what I see in Lange photos to what I experience with the watches in person.
