A. Lange & Söhne

Greetings:

I have been lurking around here for many months and have been reading about the Lange Watches.  I have also been dreaming about the day that I would eventually be able to own a Lange watch for myself.

            My love for watches began when I was 17 years old in 1972.  I bought the Omega Speed Master Chronograph (Moon Watch).  I love that watch and wear it to this day (even though I do not anticipate much wrist time in the near future).  That watch spent more time in the pawn shop than on my wrist – due to my former love of poker!  Then I became enamored with Breitling Watches, Chronomat, Navitimers (Olympus and Daytora) as well as an all gold Chronomat for dress.  I thought my collecting would end right there.

            Then I happened to wander on to this site and it was all over for me.  I lusted for a Lange.  I wasn’t sure if it was to be the Datograph or the Langematik Perpetual?  Platinum or Gold?  I read everything on this site.  People who loved the Dato, those who loved the LP.  Those who had the PT Dato and sold them for the PG Dato.  Those who will only wear PT.  The debates, the differences of opinions, and the pros and the cons.  But above it all, I read about the love for Lange watches and the respect and camaraderie that you have for each other. 

I decided to take the advice given by so many, “Go to your AD and see it in the metal.”  4 watches were laid out in front of me: a PG and PT of the Dato and the LP.   I went in leaning towards the PT Dato.  As much as wanted my first PT watch, they were not warm, they didn’t speak to me, with all due respect for those that love their PT watches.  It was down to the PG Dato and the PG LP.  I decided to turn the watches over and my mind was made up.   When I saw the movement of the Dato, there was no turning back.  The movement was so deep that my immediate thought was to take off my shoes and socks and jump right in!

Monday night I picked up my new PG Dato and I am in love (my wife accepts it).  I had some fears that after reading people’s dissatisfaction about the 39mm size, that I might be disappointed.  Not at all, it is a classic size which is great for my wrist.  I realize that the economy is not that strong right now, and I spent a lot of money, but I have no regrets at all.  Well I do actually have one regret – that I didn’t get it sooner.

That's a great journey into Lange.  (Mine own journey is not dissimilar.)  The Dato is a fantastic watch! Enjoy it in good health. (When will we see some pics?!) I laughed when I read this from you: "I knew I was nuts and that I belong on this forum, when the night before I picked up my first Lange, I was thinking about how sweet the Richard Lange in platinum would be……….."

By your definition, I must be nuts too.  (More on that later.)

Let me first thank you for such a a great presentation and introduction of yourself, here.

If we all helped you to fall in love with the Dato, it is the nicest compliment we could receive, indeed.

Platinum or RG, it doesn't really matter, the important is the watch in itself, and you just got one of the nicest watch in the world.

More than one of the nicest watch, I should have said..A Classic.

I'm pretty sure you will love it more and more.

As for the Richard Lange...Wait a bit!

You will experience that the pleausre is also in the wait...

.... There is a natural reflex, as soon as we get a watch we want very much, to immediatly go the next watch on the wish list ... Strange phenomena, instead of fully enjoy it, there is always a piece of our mind that lurk to the next buy. Maybe its the predator inside us, maybe its the natural desire and interest in the things we don't possess ( yet )....

Still, desiring something we don't possess yet, brings a special kind of pleasure that fuels us into moving forward towards what we strongly want. Another thing, as our taste evolve with time, when we want for a long time a watch, and its not jst a passing phase, the moment we get the watch is not only intense, but usually stands against the test of time... the toughest test actually.

Thanks for sharing your journey towards Lange. Post some shots as soon as you can.

... And btw, ur post is gr8, its important to talk about the context of the story. Helps putting ourselves in the situation and sharing ur emotions with u. U did a gr8 choice, i jst got my 1st lange last week, u can check my post, its a timezone in RG. I still think though that the Langematik perpetual and the datograph are 2 of the nicest watches out there. Problem is that they are too small, as i got a big wrist, and the size of the watch is important to me. There is this presence that's missing when i got a small watch on my wrist ... Still dreaming of a dato that would be 43mm like the double split  ... There is still things i dont get about lange, when u have of one the nicest date on the market, why replace it with a power reserve  on the double split??

If I was looking at buying a chronograph, the Datograph would be at the top of my list.

Like you said, if for nothing else but that fantastic movement.

And that you mentioned the Richard Lange in Pt on your last line, well for the RL fanatic that I am, i cannot help but to post this to maybe influence you that one bit for your next purchase! ( yes guys, i know i'm using this photo one too often nowadays, but i simply can't get a much better shot of my most favourite piece than this!)
