Glashütte, 11 October 2011 – A. Lange & Söhne encountered three record sales at Sotheby’s “Important Watches” auction, held on 6 October in Hong Kong.


A rare set of two limited edition GRAND LANGE 1 “Luna Mundi” wristwatches reached a hammer price of 980,000 Hong Kong dollars (about 93,750 euros), more than twice the original price. The set was produced in a limited edition of 101 exemplars and had been launched in 2003. The two timepieces in white and rose gold depict the moon phases for the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.


At the same auction, a limited edition 1815 MOONPHASE “Homage to F. A. Lange” in honey coloured gold – a new gold alloy of remarkable hardness – was sold for 275,000 Hong Kong dollars (about 26,300 euros), representing a 45 percent increase in value. The watch was only launched in 2010 to commemorate the horological tradition established by Ferdinand A. Lange in 1845. It is most likely the first time this model has ever appeared in the auction market.


Finally, a LANGE ZEITWERK in white gold fetched 680,000 Hong Kong dollars (about 65,000 euros), representing almost a 40 percent increase in value. Launched in 2009, the LANGE ZEITWERK is the first mechanical wristwatch with a truly eloquent jumping numeral display, driven by an unprecedented constant-force escapement. It is one of the most sought-after Lange timepieces.

At last round dinner event, the guests were nearly all wore the super  ALS pieces.
With the lower production quantity of just sub of 5K pieces, not surprised with North Asia market.

IMHO, I do find it a bit unusual for these watches to go at these prices though. These are not exactly the rarest Lange's (say if it's a Tourbograph that's different), and there are other samples of these models if you look around, for a fair bit less.

40%increase on retail that would put retail at around €14k which is surprisingly low.

Retail is higher than what you quoted, but the 1815 HG MP was certainly a steal, in my opinion, if you could find one.

On the continent (europe) it had a retail price of 18.500 Eu.

The surplus in the auction represents: 42%

Seems to be o.k., the maths.

For this auction prices, it is alright to discuss since it is general knowledge . 
However, street pricing discussion should be avoided otherwise our Forum will lose it merits.

Agreed with you, this auction is indeed good for the brand ALS.

To be frank....I am always doubtful of auction prices because they are so easily manipulated. But the prices at this particular one is not too unbelievable. But at least two of the above can be bought in secondary markets at cheaper then these auction prices, but not massive huge difference or premium.

One would wonder why you would pay that premium if you can get it from an AD at retail or retail with some discount.  You might need to wait a bit but as anohter member said, these are standard produciton model and are still in production (except the limited edition pair).  I checked the prices of other brand watches in this auction as well, there are a number of "current" models sold at much higher than retail and some at quite a discount.  There can be only 2 deductions (1) inexperience bidders or someone who has so much money who really doesn't care/ ot this is a way to "spend" the money (2) price manipulation in the background.  My wild guesses.
