A. Lange & Söhne

Hey guys,

I'm considering A. lange Double split or the Dato and it sincerely seems like the most difficult choice I've ever had to make between any 2 watches.

Please any advise/opinion/info would be greatly appreciated

The DS is larger, bigger and thicker than the Datograph up/down. But it is an amazing timepiece with a lot of character.

It features an unique complication (split seconds/ split minutes) and has a higher frequency (3hz vs 2,5hz).

The DS movement is even more spectacular than the Datograph one.

So my suggestion is to go to the DS if your wrist is large enough for it.





Both are great choices... because any chronograph from Lange is pure marvel.

I have a fairly small wrist, but I can comfortably wear a IWC Portuguese with is about 44.2mm, and that's the largest I think I can wear well on my wrist, of course cases/straps fit differently.

because you will be surprised by the weight of these watches. I love heavy watches by the way and it is a part of the pleasure they give.

So if the choice is between platinum and platinum, I would go to the DS!

Here is what my  Zeitwerk  looks like on my wrist, what do you think about the size of the DS in comparison to this? I can't seem to find any AD with DS in stock to try, but I'm guessing it would fit.

.. this watch can only we worn under a short sleeve or a polo shirt.

Therefore the platinum version is a good choice for you.

There is no denying here: it is a big, big watch.

I tried the ZW and it was not as big looking as it is on your wrist.

It was a RG DS and even in RG I "would" wear it with a short sleeve shirt.

The ZW on your wrist is just fine.

 

But seriously: I would be happy just to own it, for using it only at home, like the ZW striking time also.

They are great collector's items!

Thanks again mate, I think I'm getting a bit more drawn towards the DS, problem is really the fact that it may be slightly too big for my wrist, but I just love the movements. I think i would spend hours just admiring such a beautifully decorated movement. I think that has to be one of the most beautiful movements of all time for me.

Just came back from a concert given by FOU Ts'ong. The last piece was Schubert's D.849, the second greatest sonata ever. If anyone would like to know which is the greatest, I'd say it's D.960, hah~~~

If you can afford the DS without too much of a stretch, then that is the one to go for. Extremely cool functionality. The movement viewed through the case back also gives a greater perception of depth with the larger case size. It is hypnotic to watch. And great wrist presence. But a wonderful problem to have.  I find the Dato is more of a daily wearer watch as it fits nicely under shirt sleeves and has the big date function which I find extremely useful(much more than the double-split function).  However, there is just an unexplainable attraction to the double-split, regardless of how often I do not use the function I just absolutely love the watch.  Unfortunately, I find it to be a weekend watch only because of it's size.  I guess it would boil down to what your purpose for the watch would be?  Would it serve more as a daily wearer or a weekend piece?  That might help in your decision making. I have small wrists (6 3/4) and I find the DS to push my upper limit of size comfort but I over look this because of how amazing the watch is.  On the other hand when I wear the Dato I often wonder why I have any other watches as it ticks all the boxes for me.  I'm probably not much help but I would say whichever you choose I'm sure you will not regret your decision making.  Best of luck on your choice.

depends upon the case size you prefer wearing. I have both of them and my favorite is the DS .

Ovi, Wow!!! what a fantastic look on your wrist. I'm very grateful to you for taking the time to share the gorgeous pictures. I think I will go for the DS, I believe it would fit my wrist as we both have very similar wrist size, and it fits you quite well.

for those of you who had the great privilege of owing the DS or handling them, what do you think of the rose gold version??

...the platinum Double Split looks best and is great as even an every day wearer.  The roman numerals on it compared to the rose version takes the cake too.  And compared to the up/down, if you're wrist is large enough, get the DS instead. Cheers, Steve

DS is a great watch, but it's just too big and too thick for me. I can only enjoy it when it's on my friend's wrist, instead of mine.

that's unbeatable. If you want practicality, comfort and something easier to live with on a daily basis, the Dato has the upper hand here.

However, I am undeterred by the bulk of the DS even with an average wrist size because ...... it just AWESOME!

My AD called A. lange for the PL DS and was told it's no longer in production. As it stands I can only get rose gold through my AD...

Check with AD's or Lange boutiques from other parts of the world.

While the DS is an amazing watch, IMHO it does not have the every day practicality.

The Datograph  is of course the iconic watch and does better in terms of practicality and day-to-day use as it has that lovely BIG-DATE to boot and a friendlier price tag!

But why don't you look at a better bundle? That to me is the Datograph Perpetual that combines the functionality of Datograph without missing anything and on top of it adds the perpetual calendar functions. The depth of the dial is to die for! Plus of course the easy setting options and that BRILLIANT caliber.

The Dato Perpetual is one watch that you will never grow tired of. Of course now you have only the Rose Gold version being produced.
