Montblanc SIHH 2015: Villeret Tourbillon Cylindrique Geospheres Vasco Da Gama.

I thought it would be interesting to share some live pics and thoughts of this new beast.

Here you have a Tourbillon Cylindrical Hairsrping, with two Geospheres, one for each Hemisphere, Northen and Southern, with two 24 hours discs turning around these globes ( clcokwise for the Northern, anti clockwise for the Southern ) for the complication and Dream.

You have a superb finish of the sculptural tourbillon bridge, a cylindrical tourbillon hairsrping with double Phillips Termnial curves, for the Belle Horlogerie.

You also have a big case ( 47 mm ) and thick ( 15, 38 mm ), but strangely, in the real it looks less big and think than you could think while reading these numbers.

Limited to 18 pièces, an interesting high horology offer, I think.

What is your opinion on that one?

I really like two things especially: the very nice symetry together with those 2 hemispheres and the travel spirit and style with the waves, the rose des vents etc ...

Yes it is big but it is a very coherent and appealing watch.

A nice move from Montblanc, using again these very special tourbillon and spiral.

That was a too short experience, sadly. I think I will have to find the time and the opportunity to spend more time studying it. The SIHH is not the best place for that.

Montblanc is making some mighty big waves these past few years.

It has a retro-futuristic feel to it.

So cool....

So many little details like the wave pattern "guilloche" on the tourbillon plate to stay with the nautical theme.

I think MB is very aggressive this year, many good models.

This one is very unique and others are very nice, best of all, competitively priced.

I don't have much experience with MB except for my 2001 power reserve piece, where the winding spring broke 2x within 13 years, I didn't wear often.

Service and repair each time cost $700 USD, not great for a $4K watch....and leather band with clasp, $400...

My initial thought is the parts quality, so hopefully they are better nowadays.

Otherwise with such higher end pieces, maintenance cost will be a nightmare.

Nevertheless, great innovations this year for MB.

Seeing such novelties from Montblanc makes me proud to be a Montblanc Villeret owner.

I must admit I was once very afraid... Afraid that Montblanc will only focus on the lower priced Heritage series (which are great pieces don't get me wrong) and neglect developing novelties from Villeret.

Kudos to Montblanc for balancing all segments of the watch market - a watch for every budget and at good value. Indeed, this is sharing the passion for fine watchmaking coming to life. The other company I feel who does this well is ... JLC, another maison I love

It is breathtaking, and the cylindrical hairspring...whether it helps with iscochronism or not (there are contradicting study results, but in any case never detrimental) it is just so darned cool and beautiful it makes my geeky watch Purist knees go weak!

Although Minerva was known for their ability to manufacture hairsprings in-house, apparently this was the first time the Villeret atelier has manufactured a cylindrical hairspring. When I asked the watchmaker in attendance what advantages their timing tests showed for this novel arrangement, once a hallmark of high chronometry, he was unaware!

One of the hilights of this year, I think. Florian was very pride of the tourbillon bridge
